The Harmony & Grace Garden: One Year Later—Where Friendships Blossom

Robin Avery • July 1, 2026

"More than a garden—a gathering place where beauty grows and friendships blossom."

FROM SEEDLINGS TO LASTING MEMORIES:  A YEAR IN BLOOM

Last summer, we gathered to celebrate the opening of the Harmony & Grace Garden.  What began as a vision on paper and a collection of newly planted beds has gradually become something much more meaningful-a living part of life at The Retreat.

Over the past year, residents, families, staff, and volunteers have watched the garden grow and change with the seasons.  Flowers have bloomed, butterflies have visited, vegetables have been harvested, and countless conversations have taken place along the pathways and benches.

"More Than a Garden—A Place Where Life Flourishes."

Yet, the greatest harvest may not be found in the soil.  Gardens remind us that growth continues throughout life.  They teach patience, appreciation, adaptability, and hope.  Seeds planted in spring do not bloom overnight, just as wisdom is not gained all at once.  Both require time, attention, and care.

Many residents have shared memories inspired by the garden.  Some recall tending family gardens as children.  Others remember farms, orchards, victory gardens, or simply the joy of working with the earth.  These stories have become part of the garden itself, enriching it in ways no landscape plan could ever capture.

"A place where blossoms flourish, friendships deepen, and hearts feel at home."

The garden has also become a gathering place.  Friends meet there during walks.  Families visit together among the flowers.  Staff pauses for a moment of reflection during a busy day.  The space offers something increasingly rare in modern life-a chance to slow down and simply be present.

"More than a garden—a gathering place where beauty grows, and friendships blossom."

As we enter another growing season, we are excited about new additions to the garden and grounds.  Plans are underway to expand pollinator habitat, improve landscaping along the north boundary, and continue building spaces that support both beauty and connection.

The name " Harmony & Grace" was chosen carefully.  Harmony speaks to our relationship with one another, with nature, and with the changing seasons of life.  Grace reminds us that beauty often emerges not from perfection, but from patience, kindness, and acceptance.

Most importantly, we invite you to enjoy it.  Take a walk.  Sit for a few moments by the fountain.  Visit the sculptures.  Rest on the Peace Bench or the Happiness Bench.  Spend time in the sanctuary and listen to the birds, the breeze, and the quiet conversations of nature.  Bring a friend, a family member, or simply yourself.

"One Year of Growth, Beauty, and Shared Memories."

A year later, The Harmony & Grace Garden continues to bloom-not only in flowers and plants, but in friendships, memories, reflection, and joy.

After all, a garden is never truly finished.  Like life itself, it is always becoming.  As you enjoy the garden this season, watch for the new split-rail fence, expanded pollinator plantings, and landscaping improvements along the north border-another step in the continuing growth of this special place.

Like life itself, our garden is always growing—rooted in grace, blooming with possibility, and looking toward the seasons ahead.

"Like life itself, our garden is always growing—rooted in grace, blooming with possibility, and looking toward the seasons ahead."

The Harmony & Grace Garden is at its most vibrant during the summer months, bursting with colorful blooms, fresh vegetables, and peaceful places to relax. While we enjoy all that the season has to offer, it's also important to remember that rising temperatures can bring unique challenges. Let's step from the garden path into some helpful tips for staying safe during hot weather.

Too Hot to Handle? Stay Safe This Summer!

"Simple tips to help you stay cool, comfortable, and healthy during the hottest days of the season."

As temperatures rise, taking a few extra precautions can help you stay healthy, comfortable, and safe throughout the summer months.

  1.  Stay Hydrated
Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Limit beverages with caffeine or alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Dress for the Weather
Choose lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can provide extra protection when spending time outdoors.
  3. Seek Shade and Cool Spaces
Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you do go outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned areas.
  4. Don't Forget Sunscreen
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before heading outdoors. Reapply as needed, especially if you're spending extended time outside.
  5. Eat Light and Refreshing Foods
Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, berries, cucumbers, and oranges, can help keep you hydrated while providing important nutrients.
  6. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, headache, excessive sweating, nausea, muscle cramps, weakness, or confusion. If these occur, move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
  7. Check Your Medications
Some medications can affect how your body responds to heat. Talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have concerns about staying safe during hot weather.
  8. Stay Connected
Check in with friends, neighbors, or family members during periods of extreme heat. A quick phone call or visit can help ensure everyone is staying safe and comfortable.

ROSE HOFFMEYER

  The Wisdom Circle!

We are pleased to announce that our long-running reflection and discussion group, formerly known as The Long Straw Club, has a new name that better reflects its purpose and spirit.

Beginning this month, the group will be known as The Wisdom Circle.

For over two decades, this gathering has provided residents with a space to share their experiences, explore meaningful topics, and support one another through honest and thoughtful conversations. In recent years, we have taken a meaningful step toward deepening the emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being of our community.

To that end, Lloppön Rinpoche has been entrusted with promoting and nurturing the emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being of our residents. Under his guidance, The Wisdom Circle continues this tradition with a renewed sense of purpose, offering a calm and respectful environment where every voice is valued and every story is honored.

The circle symbolizes equality, community, and connection; the word wisdom speaks to the insight each person carries from a life fully lived. Together, they represent what this gathering has always been: a place of reflection, companionship, and meaning.

We invite residents, families, and staff to join us as we begin this new chapter.
The Wisdom Circle meets monthly in the Activity Room. Please encourage residents to participate. All are welcome.

“A Circle of Connection, A Gathering of Meaning.”

INTRODUCING:  The  Hearth Gathering !!

The goal of The Hearth Gathering is to complement the Wisdom Circle. While the Wisdom Circle explores teachings, reflection, and contemplative practice, the Hearth Gathering is intended to provide a more informal space centered on storytelling, reminiscing, friendship, laughter, and the sharing of life experiences.

We envision it as a welcoming gathering around the "hearth" of our community—a place where memories are honored, stories are exchanged, and connections are strengthened. Residents will be encouraged to share meaningful experiences, favorite memories, lessons learned, and moments of humor and gratitude from their lives.

Our hope is that the two programs work together: Wisdom Circle offering deeper reflection and spiritual insight, and Hearth Gathering celebrating the warmth, humanity, and lived experiences that bring our community together.

It also provides an opportunity for ownership to remain actively engaged with residents and families. We believe there is value in maintaining those personal connections, hearing residents' stories firsthand, and ensuring that leadership remains visible and accessible within the community. As a side benefit, these authentic relationships help communicate the culture and spirit of The Retreat to prospective residents and families.

We are excited to launch our first Hearth Gathering on July 8th at 10:30 a.m. and look forward to seeing how it evolves.
